Firefox 0.9 spell checker

Get Firefox!

Update 2006.01.03:

Firefox 1.5.0.1 will break the current release version of Spellbound (0.7.3). However, you can give the SpellBound Development version. I've been running it for a while now, and it seems to be stable.

Update 2004.09.21:

Spellbound works great with the preview release of Firefox 1.0. I had to reinstall the extension, but after that everything was smooth spelling.

Update 2004.07.13:

For all of you who are having problems installing Torisugari's spell check extension working should check out SpellBound. I just installed this new spell checker extension on a machine with Firefox 0.9.2, and the installation was flawless.

Get Firefox!

In February I wrote a piece on getting Torisugari's form spell checker extension working with Firefox 0.8, which was linked to a good bit. Since I some had difficulties getting the spell check extension working with Firefox 0.9, I figured that I'd share how I got the extension working this time.

The following is the successful procedure that go the spell checker working on my Windows XP machine.

  • First, uninstall Firebird
  • Grab the stuff you want from my old profile (bookmarks, etc -- which is still in a Application Data folder labeled Phoenix if you are upgrading from 0.8), and then delete the profile
  • Download Firefox 0.9 zipfile not the installer. I've heard that some people have had problems getting this extension working with the installer version
  • Unzip and place the Firefox files from where you plan on running Firefox from. Your install should have the composer.xpt file in the components subdirectory.
  • Start Firefox
  • Install spellcheck.xpi from: http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.7rc3/windows-xpi/
  • Shut down and restart Firefox
  • Install spellcheckerfe0_4_0.xpi from: http://cgi29.plala.or.jp/~mozzarel/addon/firebird/spellchecker/
When prompted to choose to the installation location, click "cancel" to install the extension in your program directory, as opposed to clicking "ok" to install it within your profile. The 3.5 version of the extension found at the site above is, in fact, the most recent version of the extension. I used the 4.0 version because I like it interface and it seems to work for me better.
  • Shut down and restart Firefox
  • Download your dictionary of choice from: http://downloads.mozdev.org/dictionaries/
  • Shut down, restart Firefox, and go spell check something
  • The first time you run the spell checker (by right-clicking in a textarea box and selecting "check spelling") you should change the value in the drop down box in the top-right corner from "download more" to your dictionary of choice.

Good work!

You are a lifesaver, man. I've been trying to do this since .9 was released. I eventually went back to .8, because I can't browse without this extension.

Now I finally get to play with the latest build. Many, many thanks.

Thanks worked a treat.

Any idea how to remove a dictionary? I accidentally installed the Ukrainian one instead of the UK one?

Also I managed to get it working by just copying composer.xpt from the .zip version to the installed version without having to uninstall my version of 0.9 (I had uninstalled 0.8 originally however to get 0.9 to work)

Has this extension been made to work with Mozilla 1.7?

Posted by: Dan on June 22, 2004 10:40 AM

Dan,

I haven't tried getting spell checker extension working with Moz 1.7. I do know that the extension worked with 1.6.

Since Firefox and the Mozilla suite are still quite closely related, I'd suspect that you could get the extension to work with 1.7. However, you will want to use spellcheck0_3_4.xpi found at http://cgi29.plala.or.jp/~mozzarel/addon/mozilla/spellcheckerfe/ in place of spellcheckerfe0_4_0.xpi.

Has anyone figured out why this doesn't work with the installer version of Firefox? I'm too lazy to uninstall.

Hi I managed to ge the spellchecker to pop up, but when I click on the Download More I am unable to go to the UK dictionary.

Any suggestions.

Where do i need to put the dictionary file?

Posted by: Nnyan on June 29, 2004 02:09 PM

First off, for anyone on Linux change the first link to:

http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/mozilla/releases/mozilla1.7rc3/linux-xpi/

I wasted a bit of time before I realized the other extension was trying to put a .dll on my system. This slick extension manager should check platform!

Onward, the only extension from the .jp site that would give me a 'Check Spelling' context menu was spellcheck0_3_5.xpi. When I click 'Check Spelling', I get a message popup titled 'Gecko' that says 'XML Parsing Error: xml processing instruction not at start of external entity Location: chrome://spellcheck/content/spellcheck.xul Line Number 1, Column 1: flex ^'.

Why does this have to be so difficult? Everything is open source, why can't someone just package this up into a single installer?

BTW, Nnyan, I am guessing something is not right with your setup because normally you are not asked where to put the dictionary file, it invokes the extension installer.

John,

The "Download more" menu in the spell check app doesn't appear to work. Instead, when you install you should install "spell-en-GB.xpi" from http://downloads.mozdev.org/dictionaries/

Posted by: Andrew on June 30, 2004 12:36 AM

Dwayne,

Thank you for adding the Linux note.

I received the same error when trying to install the 3.5 version as well and was never able to get it to work. You should try installing the 4.0 version, even though it is technically an earlier, less stable version.

Thank's for the reply, I removed the zipped firefox program and any folder that was left behind and rebooted and unzipped the firefox zip file again, I started firefox again and went to the URL you specify on your instructions but firefox would not download any of the files for the spellchecker.

I could download them with the opera browser but I have no idea where or how to install them that way if they can be installed that way at all.

Posted by: John on June 30, 2004 02:36 PM

I managed to get all that stuff to work, downloaded a dictionary, etc... But 'Download More' is still the only option! I tried another dictionary, a little window even popped up saying it had been installed.... yet still no luck.

i cant get it to work, when i click check spelling firefox crashes :'( please email me if you can think of what to do

Posted by: Smogersnots on July 5, 2004 11:56 PM

Many thanks! My wife badly needed a spell checker or she just wouldn't be able to replace IE with Firefox. The latest rash of security problems are quite scary and nobody should be using IE until/if Microsoft gets their act together.

I could get it working in firefox 0.9.1. It works most of the times, but sometime when I click on check spelling, entire firefox hangs. Can somebody help?

Posted by: Vaishalee on July 7, 2004 01:06 AM

I have followed your instructions exactly, a few times now, and I have yet to get this extension to work with 0.9, 0.9.1, or 0.9.2. I get the following error each time:

"XML Parsing Error: XML processing instruction not at start of external entity
Location: chrome://spellcheck/content/spellcheck.xul
Line Number 1, Column 1:

^ flex"

I have tried completely removing my profile from application data, completely removing Firefox from the system, and fresh install using the zip file, all to no avail. Any help would be appreciated!!

Posted by: The Raddish on July 9, 2004 10:49 AM

I get the same message as Radish above after carefully following your instructions. The message I get is:

xml parsing error:
xml processing instrruction not at start of external entity
Location: chrome://spellcheck/content/spellcheck.xul
Line number 1, column1:

then I see a little "red" flex just as Radish does.

What are we both doing wrong???

Many thanks for any help.

Raddish and tuni:

Are you trying to install the 3.5 version?

I received the same error when I tried to install this version. 4.0, however, works for me.

Andrew,
Have removed & installedFirefox 0.9 X2 - yes, the zip file and even have the composer.xpt file. Will try again now. Would it have anything to do with the fact that I'm running Win 2kPro, not XP?

Will let you know after this attempt!
thx for your patience,
tuni (frustrated)

No look with spellchecker. Have tried 5+ times following Andrew's instructions to the letter (I believe). One of the problem may be the when downloading the dictionary, it sits there on my desktop after installation. Maybe I'm doing something wrong? I would think it has to be included in Firefox for it to work. I'm using the english version - spell_en_US....

Looks like I'm giving up - I know it should work but.....

sorry to trouble you but....
thx,
tuni

Like others, I get a 'Download More' is still the only option, even though I have removed Firefox completely from my system. All the files appear to be downloaded and installed, but I guess it's not working for me because it can't find a dictionary? I'm using Win98.

Posted by: Charlie on July 12, 2004 09:31 PM

Well, I discovered a problem. Even though it says it installed the dictionary, I could not find it anywhere on my HD. The dictionary that I downloaded was "spell-en-US.xpi".

Any idea where this file should go?

For all of you who are having problems installing Torisugari's spell check extension working should check out SpellBound. I just installed this new spell checker extension on a machine with Firefox 0.9.2, and the installation was flawless. You can check SpellBound out at:

Andrew! You da man! That is what I've been expecting all along. A simple installation routine that works. I completely un-installed Firefox first, and I manually deleted the profile folder. I then ran Registry First Aid to remove any references to Firefox. I then reinstalled Firefox, imported my settings from Mozilla 1.5, and installed Spellbound. Works great.
